Mahjong becomes the game of choice this Diwali
Pune: This Diwali, parties are emerging as a popular trend among friends and families. Many people are hosting game nights featuring this classic Chinese tile game, which blends tradition, luck, and entertainment. Often accompanied by themed décor, festive snacks, and vibrant attire, these gatherings are becoming a modern alternative to traditional card parties."Our club meets twice a month to play the game over some snacks, but this year we plan to have a nice Mahjong-themed Diwali . Around 12-14 women will be a part of it," said Nita Doshi, a resident of Hadapsar.Recently, a Diwali Mahjong event was held at Poona Club. "The event consisted of three rounds — a super limit round with a twist, followed by American Mahjong and Indian Mahjong," said a social media post by Rekha Krishan.Mahjong parties are outpacing card parties this Diwali largely because they offer a unique blend of strategy and social connection. Anju Sirsikar, a resident of Bund Garden, has been playing Mahjong for almost nine years. "The Diwali Mahjong that we played was very different from the regular Mahjong events. There were many variations, and strategy plays a big role in the game. With cards, mostly luck is involved," she said.Sam Nanda, a resident of Nagar Road, said, "Events like these show how Mahjong can go far beyond the traditional. It is becoming more dynamic, more inclusive, and a perfect fit for festive gatherings where people seek both challenge and camaraderie. It is not just a game; it is now a themed celebration in itself."Sangeeta Kewalramani, who has been playing Mahjong for the last 16 years, said many Diwali parties are centred around Mahjong this year. "Not only is the décor Mahjong themed, even cocktails are named after the various games or tiles of Mahjong, like Green Dragon Mojito, Red Dragon Bloody Mary, and White Dragon Pina Colada. Food and desserts are styled as per the Mahjong tiles. The card tables have been relegated to a small corner," she said.Neetu Ahuja plans to organise a Diwali Mahjong party for the ladies in her society. "We are not serious players, but we enjoy playing casually. I will be organising some snacks and Diwali gifts for the winners. We usually have card parties during Diwali, but this year we will be having something different," she said.
