Low-lying areas along Mula, Pavana rivers remain on alert

Pune: Low-lying areas along the Mula, Mutha and Pavana in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation areas were on alert for the second day running on Friday after the discharge of water from Mulshi and Pavana dams was stepped up.

The rate of discharge from Mulshi into the Pavana was increased to 9,100 cubic feet per second (cusec), while Pavana released water into the river at 2,500 cusec on Friday afternoon, causing the water levels in both rivers to rise/

The Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations received no reports of significant relocation of residents; the authorities have been issuing continuous alerts to low-lying areas along the rivers about a possible increase in water levels.

Officials from the irrigation department said the catchments of most dams recorded good spells of rain throughout the day. Mulshi, Pavana, and Temghar received more than 25mm of rainfall, while Vadivale and Kalmodi dams received 65mm and 50mm of rainfall each.

Chaskaman, Vadivale, Kalmodi, and Andra dams started releasing water on Friday after their stock crossed 90% of their respective capacities. Meanwhile, the collective water stock in the four dams in Khadakwasla circle reached 24.3 TMC (83.45%) on Friday evening — an increase of 0.55 TMC in 24 hours.
