Love for gardening pushes many to quit well-paying jobs & become entrepreneurs

Pune: Ditching their high-paying corporate jobs to set up their own businesses, millennials are increasingly turning their hobbies into full-time professions.Bitten by the gardening bug during the calm of the pandemic has turned into a business opportunity for many today. Shubhangi Kulkarni, who recently enrolled in a gardening course said, “Baking and gardening emerged as big hobbies during the pandemic. I know so many who have enrolled in courses and have now taken to gardening as a full-time profession.”Most of the emerging gardeners are focussing on specialty gardening. “The idea is to branch out and sell unique plants, flowers and gardening essentials,” Sudeep Chouhan, a resident of Hadapsar and a gardening enthusiast, said.Tanay Bhandare, a hotel management graduate turned gardening entrepreneur, who runs Healthy Bagicha in Karvenagar, started his garden supplies shop barely two months ago. “It was a video on rose gardening that piqued my interest. Most of my clients are gardeners and farming professionals,” he said.Shilpa Naik, a former mass media professional, maintains a sprawling terrace garden at her home in Kothrud. She said, “I am in the process of launching commercial operations for my organic gardening venture. I am also doing some landscape designing at the moment,” she said.Conservation of native plants is also big among green enthusiasts. Seema Mali, who currently works in the mining industry, is planning to quit her job and open a nursery for native trees. “It is compulsory for companies in the mining industry to plant native trees in regions where they operate. I plan to consult and guide companies on what should be planted and provide them with saplings too,” she said.The challenges are abundant when starting something new and gardening is no different. “It’s been a year since I launched my shop and I feel like I’m still settling in,” said Shalini Goswami, who runs a store in Hadapsar.
