Lawyer duped of 56L by cyber crooks over insurance

Pune: A 62-year-old lawyer from Parvati has lodged a complaint with the cyber police after she was duped by online crooks of Rs55.7 lakh between 2014 and 2021, over insurance premiums.They tricked her by way of getting her to pay the premiums for an online life insurance policy and then denied her the deposit with allied benefits when she decided to close the policy. The woman had approached the cyber police with her complaint last month and after verification they registered an FIR on Saturday. She told the police that the fraudsters had contacted her posing as executives from a private bank. She did not receive any documents of policy. Inspector Kumar Ghadge of the cyber police told TOI, “The lawyer had taken the insurance policy after receiving a text message in 2014. A man contacted her, claiming to be a representative of a private bank and discussed the policy details with her.”According to the lawyers complaint, once she agreed to subscribe to the policy and the caller sent her some bogus documents to her. Believing it to be true, she kept making payments till 2020. Ghadge added, “In 2021, she decided to withdraw the sum by closing the policy and tried to contact the number mentioned on the document but no one responded. The woman then went to the bank with the policy printouts. There she realised that she had been cheated, after which she approached the police.”
