Kolhapur boy bags best outdoor performance award

PUNE: Cadet Avinash Gavas from Kolhapur was awarded the Rajput Regiment Medal for best performance in outdoor training at the passing out parade of the Technical Entry Scheme-14 course of the cadets training wing of the College of Military Engineering (CME), Khadki, on Saturday.
"I always wanted to join the armed forces. My stint at the Satara sainik school increased that urge," Gavas told the media.
Avinash is son of Shivaji Gavas and Sunita Gavas.His father works as a civil engineer in a government office in Kolhapur. Avinash has a brother and a sister, who are also engineering students.
According to press release by the CME, the other cadets who topped in various categories include cadet Rakesh Singh, who was awarded the commandant gold medal for first place in the overall order of merit. Best all-round gentlemen cadet's award was given to cadet Shiraj Kapoor, while the best sportsman medal was bagged by cadet L.C. Singh. The commandant's banner for the champion platoon for autumn term 2009 was awarded to Bravo Platoon.
It was a proud moment for the parents and the cadets as they took a formal leave from the institution, where they had spent three years of rigorous military and technical training. A total of 21 cadets will join armed forces as engineers.
As many as 150 gentlemen cadets took part in the passing out parade, The parade was commanded by wing cadet captain Rakesh Singh and reviewed by Lt. Gen. U.S.P. Sinha, commandant of the college.
Sinha exhorted the cadets to imbibe not only the traditions of valour and sacrifice of the Indian Army but also the modern day technology skills. He stressed on the need for all-round development, impeccable qualities of head and heart and a deep sense of responsibility and devotion to the country.
