NEW DELHI: A doctor apprehended from Nanded district emerged as a vital connection leading authorities to two suspects in Pune, who were wanted for the murder of Beed sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh, as stated by an official on Saturday.
Following a four-week search, the Beed Police apprehended Sudarshan Chandrabhan Ghule (26) and Sudhir Sangle (23) in Pune, after Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was kidnapped and killed. The investigation into the precise reason for the crime continues.
"Police monitored movements of Dr Sambhaji Vaybhase after his alleged links with Sudarshan Ghule surfaced during the investigation," sources in Beed Police said.
According to a police official who requested anonymity, Vaybhase was taken from Nanded for interrogation, which subsequently led to the capture of Ghule and Sangle.
Following the questioning, Vaybhase was transferred to the CID, which is handling the murder investigation. The official declined to provide additional details.
Investigators believe Vaybhase assisted Ghule in escaping after the murder.
"We cannot reveal since when we were monitoring Vaybhase," the official added.
Law enforcement has arrested six of the seven individuals named in the murder case.
On December 9, Deshmukh was kidnapped, subjected to torture, and killed, apparently for attempting to prevent an extortion attempt targeting an energy company operating a windmill project in Beed district.
Walmik Karad, a close associate of Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, has been taken into custody in the extortion case linked to the murder.
