PUNE: Investigations have revealed that the gang used floor cutting machines to cut the thick metal sheets of the ATM.
Inspector Ashok Kshirsagar of the Shirur police station said, "At the Ranjangaon ATM, the police team found that the gang had cut the ATM and had almost reached the cash container. The bank officials told us that the machine contained Rs 43 lakh."
Kshirsagar said the gang had used similar method to rob Rs 7 lakh from an ATM in Shikrapur on December 27 and around Rs 3 lakh from an ATM in Koregaon on December 31.

They would first identify the ATM where an elderly security guard was deployed. They would thrash the guard and rob his cash and cell phone. One of them would stand with the guard while a few others would keep a watch outside. A couple of them would cut the thick sheets of the ATM with the floor cutting machine. They also used a tommy to rip apart the ATM, said Kshirsagar. To divert neighbours attention from the loud noise of the machine, the suspects intermittently pulled the shutter up and down. This was done to make the people think the guard was working on the shutter, Kshirsagar said. In not more than 30 minutes they would break the machine and decamp with the cash.
