PUNE: A month after the murder of Rohan Kadam (23) of Ambedkar housing society in Yerawada, the crime branch of the Pune police arrested four suspects on Thursday. Kadam was found murdered near the Mali training institute near a compound wall of the University of Pune on February 5.
The suspects, Pramod Tejraj Pillay (36), Lawrence alias Mogya Moses Joseph (19), Rohit Balkrishna Kapse (23) and Nannath alias Sonya Jadhav (19), are all residents of Sangamwadi.
They were arrested, following a tip off. The Yerawada police had arrested Joseph and Kapse in an alleged body offence case last year, Additional commissioner of police Anant Shinde (crime) added.
Pillay runs a restaurant - Cafe Seven - on M G road in Pune Cantonment. Kadam used to frequent the restaurant with his friends and would leave without paying the bills. When Pillay objected to this, he victim asked for Rs 2 lakh extortion money.
Shinde said that soon after Pillay and the other suspects hatched a plan to kill Kadam. They took him in a car and strangled him to death with a nylon rope and dumped his body near the institute.
The police have recovered the car belonging to Mohit Koli, friend of one of the suspects, and a rope. Kadam was unemployed and allegedly associated with criminal Ravi Pardeshi and his son Rushi Pardeshi.
The victim's mother had then lodged a missing persons compliant with the Yerawada police station on February 4 and told police that her son had received the telephone call from his friend and he had left with them.
On February 5, the Chatushrungi police had found a body of an youth near University of Pune, but could not ascertain the identity so they had appealed through newspapers and given a detailed description of the deceased.
After reading the newspaper reports, Kadam's relatives approached the Chatushrungi police and later ascertained the identity of the victim.
The suspects were arrested by a police team comprising inspectors Sunil Pawar and Sunil Bhosale, assistant police inspector Shaukatali Sayyed and policemen Sunil Kadambande, Ashok Bhosale, Sudhir Sakhore, Steven Sundaram, Sikander Jamadar, Sambhaji Wagh, Sachik Kokare, Dinesh Shinde, Dada Pawar, Shivanand Swamy, Sanjay Paigude, Mohan Dongare and Aslam Attar.
The suspects were handed over to inspector Vishwanath Ghanwat (crime) of the Yerawada police station for further action.
