PUNE: Former Union law minister
Ram Jethmalani said here on Saturday that an inclusive judicial commission should be established to help improve Indian judiciary.
Jethmalani was speaking on the subject ‘Appointment in higher judiciary in India: Need for reform’ at the Bharti Law College in Kothrud.
“Political parties promise that such a commission will be established, but forget it promptly the moment they come to power.
It is almost as if they prefer corrupt judges,” he said. Also, due to the prevalence of some corrupt lawyers, the judiciary has become a dreaded term.
He said a judicial commission is required to ensure that honest judges and lawyers are a part of the Indian judiciary.
Also, the commission should be inclusive and have honest people on board. “It is important that such judges be appointed who are not the sorts to appoint their relatives in government offices,” he added.
Speaking about the commission, he said, “The prime minister and the leader of opposition should be part of this commission. Also, people who have done good work in the social sector should be included.”
Meanwhile, Jethmalani stressed that academicians should increase their participation in the judiciary.
Commenting on the Supreme Court’s involvement in the case of alleged misappropriation of assets by a judge, Jethmalani said the apex court should stay away from such cases.
