Fireman suffers injuries while putting out blaze in Shivane
Pune: A fireman suffered injuries to his shoulders and legs while extinguishing a blaze at a shop containing materials for pandal making and other furniture around 3.45am on Wednesday in Shivane.
Fireman Akshay Gaikwad was shifted to a hospital in Warje, where he is recuperating.
According to fire brigade officials, the team reached the spot after receiving an emergency call.
"The fire started in a facility in Dangat Patil Nagar in Shivane. The shop did not have a roof, but its sides were covered by tin sheets. The owner kept bamboo, wooden planks, decorative clothes, and other furniture required for wedding ceremonies at the facility," fire station officer Prabhakar Umratkar told TOI.
"Flames were visible from a distance. Smoke had filled the entire area. We deployed fire tenders from Warje and other fire stations," Umratkar said.
"Fireman Gaikwad decided to climb on the roof of a hutment located nearby and pulled the water hose. He wanted to extinguish the flames from a close range. However, as soon as he stepped on the tin sheet roof of the hutment, it caved in. Gaikwad fell inside the hutment and suffered injuries. The roof had rusted," he said.

In another incident in the city, a speaker manufacturing unit in Mangdewadi near Katraj was gutted in a blaze around 4.30am on Wednesday. No one was injured in the incident. The unit is spread over 2,000sqft.
The facility has wood and other articles, the fire brigade said.
Fire station officer Pradeep Khedkar told TOI, "One of the employees of the unit was present in the facility. He managed to run to safety after spotting some flames and smoke."
