pune: what director ved rahi regarded with some trepidation has now turned into a reason for celebration.the all-india release of his film, veer savarkar, has finally been scheduled for november 30. presented by noted musician sudhir phadke and produced under the banner of the specially set up savarkar darshan pratishthan, the film incorporates events in the life vinayak damodar savarkar, the revolutionary and political prophet who is best known for his 11 years incarceration in a 7x 13 ft cell in the notorious cellular jail in the andaman islands.
speaking to the press after a special screening held at the national film archives auditorium, ved rahi said that the film has been a dream come true for sudhir phadke, while it has been a revelation of sorts for himself. unfortunately, today savarkar seen only as a hindu fundamentalist and i hope that the film will put the record right, he said. consequently, the film goes to great lengths to explain that the concept of hindutva promoted by savarkar was actually a strong sense of national identity. i have tried to bring before the audience the image of savarkar as it unfolded before me after seven years of research - that of a noble patriot, a progressive thinker, an outspoken writer and a social reformer, added mr rahi. with a budget of rs 5 crore the project received a central government grant of rs 1.5 crore and that, according to mr rahi, helped boost the production values of the film. "the ambience of the cellular jail had to be picturised right so that the brutality and the pain that savarkar suffered at the hands of an irish jailor would be projected with the emotional depth it called for." playing the role of savarkar is shailendra gaur, a delhi-based theatre actor.
