Faith... Focus... Fawzan
PUNE: After receiving a rousing reception at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai recently , noted photojournalist Fawzan Husain is set to open, 'Faith', his latest solo exhibition of pictures, at the Balgandharva art gallery here on Friday.
'Faith' features 40 pictures taken over the last two years, at places of worship across the length and breadth of the country.

Taking time off from routine assignments, Husain has travelled on holidays from Ladakh to Karnataka and from Gujarat to West Bengal in search of the right frame. "I work harder during holidays," he quips.
Interestingly, other than Mumbai, Husain has only chosen Pune and Baroda, which he says are "very culturally aware" cities. So is Kolkata, but the logistics is forbidding.
Over the last two decades or so, Husain has participated in 13 exhibitions, seven of them solos, including this one. The sequences of concerns in his life are reflected in his choice of themes.
'Faces: Indian Women' after he met his wife, 'Children of Kamathipura' after he had his own children, 'Bombay's Life Line (Rail) Tracks' after he moved to the suburbs from Central Mumbai...

"At 40, god, religion and a sense of looking back on life prompted me to explore the concepts of faith and religion," explains Husain.

In a country, with a marvellous multiplicity of faiths, there was no dearth of material for Husain, but some outings did prove unproductive.
"You have to know the subject to take these kinds of pictures... You have to also know what to avoid. It's different from news and magazine assignments, where the focus is clear," he notes.
But were there problems, considering religion is a touchy issue. "You'll be surprised how tolerant our people really are," he concludes.
The result is a treat, with several pictures bordering on paintings and almost all faiths, including Buddhist monks of Ladakh, are reflected in the exhibition.
