PUNE: The Dattawadi police on Saturday arrested Babbu alias Nizamuddin Jalaluddin Shaikh (24), who had escaped from the Dattawadi police station on December 13.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team, led by assistant inspector Brahmanand Naikwadi of the Dattawadi police station, laid a trap near Katraj and arrested Shaikh.
Shaikh has 34 cases against him, including cases of chain snatching, house break-in and vehicle theft.
Earlier, he had been arrested by the Cantonment police and then transferred to the Dattawadi police station as part of an investigation into a chain-snatching incident. However he had managed to flee from the toilet of the Dattawadi police station.
On Saturday, Naikwadi received a tip-off that Shaikh was in Kondhwa and preparing to go to Mumbai. "We nabbed him while he was trying to get lift on the highway," Naikwadi said.
During interrogation Shaikh revealed that after escaping from the clutches of the police he had gone to Mumbra near Thane. After staying their for two or three days he had returned to Pune.
According to Naikwadi, Shaikh (24) is a resident of Mithanagar, Kondhwa and was arrested on November 17 at Babajan Chowk in Pune Cantonment. The police managed to solve 12 cases of chain snatching following his arrest. The police also recovered 22 tolas of gold worth Rs 3.50 lakh from him.
Naikwadi said, "Shaikh was produced in court on Sunday and remanded to police custody for two days."
