PUNE: "In 75 years of independence, the country has seen development, but it seems inadequate because when the Chinese army hits out at India on the border, we feel it has a long way to go. In the next 25 years, we should be in a position to hold our heads high," Sonam Wangchuk, popular educator and scientist from Ladakh, said on Tuesday.

He was awarded the

Lokmanya Tilak

National Award for 2020 in Pune. It is instituted by

Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust

. Wangchuk said, "I am talking about this as person from the border and appeal to the nation that India needs to be protected. The Indian army is not enough for the cause. Every individual of this country needs to contribute."

Wangchuk was presented with a momento, a certificate and Rs one lakh. He also inaugurated the new building.

Wangchuk added, "At a time when China is spending heavily on border security, we are engaged in corruption and politics. Banning Chinese products is not going to help. Swadeshi products also need to be promoted aggressively just like Lokmanya Tilak did."

Wangchuk said that he did not understand

Marathi

but he appreciated the fact that the organisers had such respect for their mother tongue and did not shy away from conducting the event in it.
