Pune: Two men on a motorcycle were run over by a truck coming from behind soon after they fell off the bike after crashing into a barricade at Dukkarkhind near Chandni Chowk on Thursday.
The victims, Balu Meghawat (18) and Sitiya Nainawat (27), from Lamantanda in Pashan, were returning home from Katraj when the
accident occurred.
Police said a breakdown-hit light commercial vehicle (LCV) was parked and a barricade was placed around it.
The LCV driver, however, did not put any sign board to alert other drivers. “We have booked the drivers of the truck and the LCV on the charge of causing deaths by negligence,” sub-inspector Trupti Patil of the Warje Malwadi police told TOI.
Patil said the LCV was parked in a dangerous manner and a mechanic was engaged in the repair work. “The victims had gone to Katraj to offer prayers at a spiritual programme in their relative’s house. On their way back home, they reached Dukkarkhind around 5.15pm. The motorcycle crashed the barricade, which was near the halted LCV,” Patil said.
She said a truck plying behind the bike was unable to stop suddenly and ran over them. Meghawat and Nainawat were not wearing helmets, she added.
