PUNE: The Times of India in a report on March 2 (Buying gold? Check your carats first), had pointed out how large number of jewellers in Pune were charging the same rate for 23 carat and 24 carat gold despite there being a 4 per cent difference in the purity levels of these two standards.
Reacting to a the report, Suryakant Pathak, consumer rights activist and founder member of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, has said that his group will take up the issue in the interest of consumers.
“This is an extremely important issue and this is the first time that it has surfaced. We plan to study the issue in detail and take it up on behalf of consumers, he said.
Pathak said it was important for the members of the public to ascertain that they were not being charged for 24 carat gold when, in fact, they were purchasing gold of 23 carat, which has four per cent less purity.
