PUNE: A police constable attached to the traffic branch of the Pune police was severely assaulted by four persons on the National Defence Academy (NDA) road at Warje on Sunday following a petty quarrel.
The constable, R A Shirsat (25), sustained severe injuries and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment. He got three fractures on his face and is in the intensive care unit (ICU), said inspector Sunil Gharge of Warje Malwadi police station.
The Warje police have arrested two suspects identified as Sameer Vikas Bansode (19) and Ganesh Mukesh Gaikwad (24), both residents of Karvenagar.
The main suspect and a history-sheeter Tushar alias Tinkya Vijay Kale and his accomplice Sagar Walhekar fled the spot.
Inspector Gharge said that on Sunday afternoon Shirsat had gone to serve a summons in Warje area. He asked Kale about the address, who was standing with three others by the road side. But, Kale refused. "He told him, You are a policeman, find out the address on you own'. After that Kale and Shirsat entered into a brawl," Gharge said.
"Kale and his four accomplice thrashed Shirsat. They pelted stones on him and even smashed his face with pots and fled away in a car," Gharge said. Shirsat has got three fractures on his face and is being treated at the ICU of the private hospital.
Bansode and Gaikwad have been arrested. However, the main suspect Kale and his accomplice Walhekar are still untraced. Kale has a criminal record and was arrested by the Kothrud police in 2004 in connection with body offences.
"We have sent two teams in search of Kale and Walhekar. Meanwhile, Bansode and Gaikwad were produced in the court and were remanded to police custody till April 9," Gharge said.
