PUNE: Failure to clear the Army recruitment exam by four marks followed by failure to clear the police recruitment exam led a 22-year old second year arts student of Modern College to commit suicide in the Janwadi area on Wednesday.
The youth Raju Ghanekar who was described by his family memembers as someone who firmly believed in the dictum "earn and learn" took the drastic step of hanging himself to the ceiling with a sari on Wednesday.
Raju''s grieving sister Suvarna explained that her brother had not taken a single rupee from his father, an ice cream vendor, for studies.
After failing to clear the Army recruitment exam by four marks and then the police recruitment exam, Raju was hurt as he was forced to leave his job as a waiter in a city hotel two months ago, his sister said.
Raju''s brother, Sanjay who works with a city hotel told TNN that he was puzzled when Raju, who slept on the upper storey of their single storey house in the Janata Vasahat slum failed to come down for breakfast.
When he went up to inquire, he was shocked to find Raju hanging from the ceiling fan, a tearful Sanjay said with a choked voice.
Sanjay said that his father, Tukaram, an ice-cream vendor and mother Kalavati had gone to Chiplun, when the incident occurred.
Raju''s friend Sunil Wargade told TNN that Raju showed no signs of depression.
"On the previous night he was talking with us and then went back home," Wargade said adding there was no hint that this might be the last time we might see him.
Police sub-inspector R.G Khomne of the Janwadi chowky told TNN they had found a suicide note in Raju''s pocket which said, "I have no job and hence I am committing suicide and please do not hold any-body responsible for my suicide." The police have registered a case of accidental death.
