Pune: Citizens have objected to inadequate disposal of garbage by the string of small eateries, causing chronic garbage dumping at undesignated spots in areas of Wanowrie, Hadapsar and Katraj.
Akshay Joshi, a resident of Wanowri said, “We carry out clean-up and plantation drives every weekend in our areas but the very next day, the vendors start littering the cleaned areas back again. The ward office should impose fines for such inappropriate acts to help curb the situation.”
“The residents have been working hard to clean the areas than the civic body. Even the CCTV cameras have fail to scare these vendors and hawkers while they throw the trash on the roads,” said Rukmani Dohar, a resident of Hadapsar.
Nisar Mujawar, senior sanitary inspector of Wanowrie ward office said, “We have been keeping a watch on the vendors and have collected fine of Rs1,56,800 from 165 vendors in the areas of Wanowrie, Sopanbaug, Ramtekdi, Kondhwa covered under prabhag 24,25,and 27 from July 1 to July 31. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) provides a vehicle to pick the trash from their doorstep on daily basis, yet some vendors throw bags of unsegregated waste in undesignated spots.”
Prasad Katkar, assistant municipal commissioner of the Hadapsar ward office said that there have been 320 cases of improper disposal of garbage in the month of July from Magarpatta to NIBM Road. “We have collected a fine of Rs1,67,000 from the vendors.”
“PMC vehicles are irregular so we have no choice but to throw the garbage on the side of the road. We cannot keep collecting the garbage and wait till it drives away the customers,” said a vendor from Wanowrie.
A vendor from Ramtekdi said, “We throw our garbage in areas that are used as a dumping spot. PMC should provide designated collection bins in areas for vendors.”
