CISF starts managing crowd beyond airport premises too
Pune: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) contingent at the airport, whose job has been limited to ensuring security of the civil enclave, has started assisting flyers and the local police for crowd management and maintaining order on the city side of the facility. This includes the AeroMall premises.Senior officers of CISF at the airport told TOI that they are also carrying out dry runs to manage passengers at the new terminal building, in a bid to stay prepared for once it opens to air traffic.“The building may be inaugurated, but if operations don’t begin, there will be complaints. For the latter, tests and retests of all systems must be conducted. Our contingent is working on the same,” a senior CISF officer told TOI, adding, “We are anticipating that areas of the new building could need extra care. We are looking at passenger flow and carrying out trials to be ready for when air traffic begins.”Officers said the new building is expected to boost passenger traffic, prompting them to start taking care of the airport’s city side as well. The senior officer added, “Our personnel, both in uniform and civil clothes, have been working with the local police for streamlining traffic flow to and from the airport. Additional personnel have been deployed to the city side. Spots like the AeroMall and new airport road witness traffic problems, which affects flyers. CISF and Airport police station officers recently had a meeting and we requested them for additional deployment, too.”Another senior CISF officer said they are also guiding flyers from the arrival to departure areas. “We have placed our personnel on regular patrolling near the departure area to ensure that flyers are not confused while moving to the AeroMall. Arriving flyers are also being guided to the AeroMall cab pick-up point,” the officer said.Flyers appreciated the measures. Anshul Pandey, a student and frequent flyer, told TOI, “More efforts from all quarters will help smoothen operations. There is still too much crowding around the airport. The whole system needs an overhaul. Despite being ready, the new building is still locked.”Top airport sources told TOI that a final phase of testing of different security-related equipment and other features is ongoing at the new building. A senior airport official, requesting anonymity, said, “The in-line X-ray baggage system installation is in the advanced stages. Final testing of CCTV systems, flight information display screens, explosive trace detectors (ETD), common user terminal equipment (CUTE) and the DigiYatra system are all going on and will be completed very soon.”
