Check background of cab drivers, says top cop

Pune: The recent stalking case has placed cab aggregators in a bad light, police commissioner Rashmi Shukla said on Wednesday.

Admitting that many working women in the city depend on these services trusting them to be safe, Shukla pointed out the importance of companies ensuring through background checks of all their driver partners.

Shukla said, “The traffic branch of the Pune police will write to the cab aggregators to ensure complete background checks of all potential driver-partners before taking them on board. Sufficient ID proofs must be sought, and their antecedents checked before employing the drivers.”

She also urged working women to use the Buddy Cop system. “Very soon, all Ola and Uber cabs will prominently display the phone numbers of Buddy Cop and Police Kaka. All women are welcome to use the service and take help of the police at any time during the journey if they are stalked, stared at or if the driver misbehaves in any other manner,” Shukla said.

An Ola cab driver was arrested by the Chandannagar police on Tuesday for stalking a 30-year-old software engineer working with an IT firm in Bavdhan. The driver had not only spoken inappropriately to her during her ride in his cab on August 4, but he also called her on her phone and made lewd comments. tnn
