Centre gives state directives on girl child campaign

PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: The ministry of women and child development has given a directive to the state government that Pune, Nashik, Hingoli, Parbhani, Solapur, and Latur districts must complete their pledge towards the protection, safety, value and education of every girl child under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) campaign.

The ministry has also directed the state to mark January 24 as National Girl Child Day and dedicate a special day, every month, to celebrate the campaign.

The census data of 2011 showed a significant decline in the Child Sex Ratio (CSR), between the age group of 0-6 years. The state has to prepare a district action plan to improve the CSR and share it with the ministry of women and child development.

On August 6, 2016, the government had approved the resolution that the BBBP campaign would run for three years in the six districts. Multi-sectoral intervention and media advocacy outreach were to be undertaken in 19 districts including Satara, Thane, Nanded, suburban Mumbai, Mumbai city, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Bhandara,

, Gondia, Chandrapur and

.

The campaign, launched in January 2015, aimed at ensuring that girls are born, nurtured and educated without discrimination and are allowed to become empowered citizens of the country with equal rights. A national task force that functions at the state- as well as gram panchayat-level was also formed to provide guidance and funds while ensuring the implementation of the campaign.
