BRTS launched on the Pune-Solapur road two months ago has led to chaotic traffic situation on the road.
PUNE: The bus rapid transit system (BRTS) launched on the Pune-Solapur road two months ago has led to chaotic traffic situation on the road, besides hardly making any dent in the travel time on the 6.3-km Swargate-Hadapsar route. The BRTS has not only been a let down for commuters, but it has also doubled the chaos on the route, with private vehicles entering the BRTS lane due to lack of space on the remaining part of the road.
On Thursday, severe traffic snarls were witnessed on the route and harrowed motorists began driving through the BRTS lanes in a bid to move faster. The passengers in the BRTS buses told TOI that the new system made a slight difference, with their travel time reducing only by a few minutes although the buses were more comfortable as compared to the normal buses. Motorists, who have to use the remaining portion of the road, are, however, a harried lot.
They wondered why the authorities implemented the BRTS in haste on the Hadapsar route when it was facing similar problems on the Katraj route due to hasty and improper implementation. A spot visit on Friday revealed that the lanes demarcated for the BRTS buses have been laid only on the stretch from Fatimanagar junction to the Hadapsar depot. On the remaining stretch of the road — from Swargate to Fatimanagar — the buses move as normal PMT buses. In many places, where the lanes have been demarcated, the polygram bricks used for the purpose have disappeared, the railings at bus stops have gone missing and bus stops too have remained unused.
