PUNE: Loads of fun, frolic and fashion are words not usually associated with the austere tradition of fasting. However, this year’s Karva Chauth, which falls on October 8, may be a little different.

This traditional “ladies’ celebration” — where married women observe a day-long fast and pray for the long lives of their husbands — is getting a cool makeover.

Many

pre-Karva Chauth

bashes are being planned by women across the city. A day, sometimes two, before the fasting, women will be feasting and getting together for some fun.

Preety Gandhi, a 37-year-old from Somwar Peth, is teaming up with her friend

Komal Sarin

to host their pre-Karva Chauth party called Pink’s High. Highlights of the bash include pole dancing and belly dancing competitions along with several other games. “There are a lot of preparations before the day of Karva Chauth. So we thought: ‘Why not make the preparations fun’,” says Gandhi. She adds that her mother-in-law too used to host such parties.

“Earlier, Karva Chauth used to be an intimate affair. We used to have a day for mehendi when all the ladies got together, and there used to some signing and dancing,” said Avi Sethi, a 32-year-old resident of Prabhat Road. She feels the pre-Karva Chauth bashes are a welcome change as they add a fresh dose of enthusiasm.

Even some restaurants are pitching in. ‘O Naari, Let’s go Funkaari, Instead of being

Sanskari

!’ screams the tagline of the pre-Karva Chauth event organised by Rangla Punjab, a restaurant at Pimple Saudagar. It is offering unlimited drinks, food and games. It is also hosting a fashion show.

“Throughout the year, women are busy taking care of their families and their jobs. They rarely find time for themselves. Our ladies-only event is to help them enjoy,” said Tushar Dalvi, the corporate general manager of Rangla Punjab.
