PUNE: Former MP Girish Bapat’s son Gaurav Bapat has expressed his interest in contesting the Lok Sabha bypoll in Pune on a BJP ticket.
BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule was in Pune on Monday for various party events. Bapat met Bawankule in the city and expressed his desire to get a ticket from BJP.
Confirming it to TOI, Bapat said: “I will not deny that I not only met Bawankule but I have also expressed to him that the Bapat family would likely continue the legacy of my father. I am not at all adamant to get a ticket from the party but it is a request from my side to consider my name for the ticket.”
The bypoll was necessitated with the death of senior BJP leader and Pune MP Girish Bapat on March 23 after a prolonged illness. He was 73. — Anurag Bende
