Health officials said the number of GBS cases also increased to 173, an addition of three more patients to Wednesday's tally of 170.

The senior official said the sample tested positive for Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) was collected from a housing society in Kirkatwadi, a GBS cluster.

The Karvenagar resident was admitted to Kashibai Navale Hospital in Narhe on Jan 28 with complaints of fever, diarrhoea for three days, difficulty in walking and bilateral lower limb weakness. On examination, he was found with flaccid paralysis (acute weakness or paralysis with reduced muscle tone).

"Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) tests, which measure how fast electrical impulses travel through a nerve, confirmed GBS in the patient. He was given an intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) cycle. His condition, however, deteriorated and he passed away at 5.30pm on Wednesday," a health official said.

A doctor at the hospital told TOI, "The patient had multiple comorbidities, including uncontrolled diabetes. He passed away due to an acute ischemic stroke (when blood flow to the brain is cut off), as well as uncontrolled diabetes. GBS was not the direct cause of his death."

A report from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), however, listed GBS as the third cause of death in the patient.

The doctor said the hospital had conducted a CT scan and requested approval for a stroke treatment package under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, but the patient passed away before treatment could be started.

"Of these, five patients have already been discharged, while six are in the ICU and five are in the general ward. The six ICU patients are on ventilators, including three paediatric cases," a hospital official said.
