Pune: The civic administration has estimated requirement for over 4,324 polling booths for 34.54 lakh registered voters in 58 civic wards for the coming municipal elections.
As many as 3,431 polling booths were set up during the 2017 civic polls. The numbers are expected to go up by at least by 26% in the civic polls to be held in the next few months. The number of voters has gone up to 34.5 lakh for the upcoming polls from 26.34 lakh in 2017.
PMC officials said, “Altogether 23 villages were included in the PMC limits in 2021 and 11 villages in 2018. This has pushed up the voter tally. The voters from newly merged areas are going to vote in the PMC polls for the first time. We have prepared preliminary estimation of polling booths. The numbers will be finalised after the poll schedule is announced by the state election commission.”
The polling booths will come up in civic and private schools, PMC buildings and in public buildings. Officials will conduct a survey of schools and establishments from merged areas to identify them as polling booths. “We will ensure minimum hardship to citizens during voting,” officials said.
