PUNE: A 35-year-old man arrested in one of the seven cases of rioting and arson in Parbhani on Dec 11 over the desecration of a replica of the Constitution, died under judicial custody in Parbhani on Sunday morning.

Parbhani police identified him as Somnath Vyankat Suryavanshi, who was residing in a rented room at Shankarnagar in the Mondha area of the town. He was accused no 20 in the case registered by the New Mondha police.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Nanded) Shahaji Umap told TOI, “Suryavanshi complained of severe chest pain early Sunday morning following which the Parbhani district jail authorities took him to the district civil hospital. The doctors there examined and declared him dead.”

Parbhani’s officiating Superintendent of Police Yashant Kale said, “Suryavanshi was in police custody for two days after his arrest and was later shifted to the district jail under judicial custody.”

According to the FIR registered by the police, on the night of Dec 11, a total of 50 identified and 300 to 400 unidentified suspects were booked on charges of rioting, arson and other offences. Suryavanshi was among the identified suspects.

A local crime branch team arrested and other identified suspects and later handed him over to the area police station. Suryavanshi was produced before a court on Dec 12 and was remanded in police custody till Dec 14 before being shifted to jail under judicial custody.

Parbhani city’s sub divisional police officer (SDPO) Dinkar Dambale said, “We learnt about the death around 7am today.”
