3 Union ministers & one Maha mantri of BJP taste defeat

Pune: Three BJP Union ministers — Raosaheb Danve, Bharati Pawar and Kapil Patil — had to bite the dust this Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra, as Congress and NCP (SCP) candidates severely dented their strongholds.BJP’s Sudhir Mungantiwar, a minister in the state cabinet, met the same fate in Chandrapur. Congress’ Pratibha Dhanorkar defeated the six-term MLA by a margin of 2,60,406 votes.Two-time former Congress MLA Kalyan Kale emerged as the giant killer in Jalna, where he halted Union minister Raosaheb Danve’s victory run. Kale won by over one lakh votes.Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SCP)’s Bhaskar Bhagare defeated BJP minister Bharati Pawar in Dindori by 1,13,199 votes, where farmer’s anger was palpable during the election campaign. NCP (SCP) candidate Suresh Mhatre won in Bhiwandi, defeating BJP’s Union minister of state Kapil Patil.Union minister Danve was eyeing his sixth consecutive win in this Lok Sabha elections, but he did not have the support of the undivided Shiv Sena this time. He also faced a strong anti-incumbency mood. Kale, a known face of Congress in the region, gained from his strong grassroots connection with the party workers and the constituency.Bharati Pawar, elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2019 and made a minister, had sensed the unrest among the onion farmers in her constituency. She repeatedly urged the Union govt to reconsider its decision on onion export.Congress’ Chandrapur LS seat candidate Pratibha Dhanorkar’s maiden electoral foray was the 2019 assembly polls. Her husband, Suresh Dhanorkar, was the only Congress candidate to win in Maharashtra in the 2019 LS polls. After his death, the party picked her to contest the seat. During her election campaign, she had highlighted people’s frustration over rising inflation, cost of living and farmers’ distress.Suresh Mhatre, a turncoat who left Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena to join NCP (SCP), defeated two-time MP and Union minister Kapil Patil in Bhiwandi constituency by over 66,000 votes. Mhatre, into the warehouse business, switched eight political parties in his career.
