PUNE: Twenty five Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members were booked for trespassing, rioting and unlawful assembly and other charges after they barged into Savitribai Phule Pune University's (SPPU) main building when a meeting of the management council was going on around 1pm on Monday.
The protestors created a ruckus over the rap song that was filmed on campus and broke the glass pane of the entrance to the main building.
Senior inspector Balaji Pandhare of Chatushrungi police told TOI on Monday evening, "Based on a complaint lodged by the university's security officer
Sudhir Dalvi, we have registered a case of rioting, mischief, unlawful assembly and trespass against 25 protestors and have identified eight. We summoned three ABVP members to the police station and served them notices to join our investigation."
When the protest started around 12.30pm, the members shouted slogans over the rap song issue, he said.
"Later, four or five of them barged into the main building from behind, damaged the glass shield and raised slogans. We will identify all the protestors and question them," he added.
The protestors want the university to act against those responsible for the rap song's filming on the campus. The SPPU has constituted an internal committee to investigate this matter.
SPPU's officiating vice-chancellor Karbhari Kale said there is no delay from their side in the investigation. "Unbiased action will be taken against anyone involved. The internal committee will look into who was the guard, when did they (people who filmed the song) get inside the building, what did they do inside and so on. We will act once the investigating committee submits the report," he said.
Kale said they will also take action against the ruckus and have begun the process to file an FIR.
Ravindra Shingnapurkar, the SPPU management council member, said the protestors had four demands.
The university will open the sports complex for all students from May 1, investigate the list of students who have allegedly received wrong marks and take action within 24 hours and conduct the convocation ceremony between May 15 and 20, he added.
ABVP state secretary Anil Thombare, who led the protest, said, "The SPPU officials have been ignoring our demands, including the rap song issue. About 200 ABVP members were protesting peacefully. We wanted the management council to discuss our demands. We only threw papers with our demands written on them because the vice-chancellor refused to meet us or accept our demands."
