2 sons benefited from MPSC exam scam: ACB
MUMBAI: Former ACP Mulani, who was recently quizzed by the SIT in the fake stamp paper scam, is likely to be questioned by the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) in connection with the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) recruitment scam, sources said.
“The names of Mulani’s two sons figure in the list of 400 candidates who allegedly used unfair means to clear the 1999 exams for police sub-inspectors and sales tax inspectors, a senior ACB official said.

Mulani, he said, is alleged to have connived with former MPSC member, Saylee Joshi, to help his sons pass the exams. Joshi has already been arrested by the ACB.
The ACB has recorded the statements of a majority of candidates who have indulged in unfair practices, and that includes Mulani’s sons, sources said. The ACB has informed the SIT that it would like to interrogate Mulani at the SIT’s convenience. “The decision, whether to arrest him or not, will be taken after the interrogation, an official said. Incidentally, SIT chief S.S. Puri himself had investigated the MPSC scam as the then chief of ACB. ACB officials said Puri had thorough knowledge about the scam and Mulani’s alleged involvement.
Besides Mulani, the ACB also suspects the involvement of a senior IPS officer, whose sons, too, have cleared the exams. Since the officer’s kin are not linked to the 1999 exams, the issue has been kept on the backburner, they said. The scam was exposed in 2001 when some candidates complained of malpractices in the 1999 exam.
The investigations were handed over to the ACB, which arrested MPSC chairman S.D. Karnik and 24 others, including several policemen. The large-scale malpractices in the exam forced the government to temporarily freeze recruitment of sub-inspectors and sales tax inspectors.
