Two final-year engineering students drown in backwaters of Pavana

Villagers fished out the body of Sujit Janardan Ghule (21), having his roots in

Ahmednagar district

. A team of Shiv Durga Mitra brought out the body of Rohit Rajkumar Kotgire (21), belonging to Nanded district.


The victims, Ghule and Kotgire, were final-year students of the engineering college.

Swimming is prohibited in Pavana dam. Still, many people venture into its water, endangering their lives.

Last April, a 21-year-old youth had drowned in the dam.

An officer from the

Lonavla

rural police said about 11 students, including four women, had on Tuesday gone to the backwaters of Pavana dam from the city on two-wheelers.

They entered the waters at Brahmnoli village, about 65km from the city, around 11am.

“Ghule and Kotgire lost their balance and started drowning. Their friends tried hard to save them but failed,” the officer said.

The other students of the engineering college immediately informed the villagers about the accident. Some residents of the village fished out Ghule’s body around 3pm.

“Kotmire was not traceable. So, the team of Shiv Durga Mitra was summoned. We traced and fished out his body around 5.30pm,” said Sunil Gaikwad of Shiv Durga Mitra.

They stayed in a hostel in Karvenagar. A case of accidental death has been registered with the Lonavla rural police.
