Why Jipmer’s organ transplantation institute proposal dropped

PUDUCHERRY: Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research’s proposal for establishing an Institute of organ transplantation at Sedarapet on the outskirts of the town was dropped after the Puducherry government had cancelled the land allotted for the project, said minister of state for health and family welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar.

Furnishing a written reply to a query posed by Puducherry MP V Vaithilingam, Pawar said Jipmer proposed to establish the institute on a piece of land allotted by the Puducherry government in 2018. “However, the Puducherry government has issued a letter cancelling the allocation of the land to Jipmer. Hence the proposal could not progress,” Pawar said.

Pawar said the Union government decided to establish State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (Sotto) in each state and Union territory as per the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP) guidelines for the period between 2021-22 and 2025-26. The respective state/Union territory governments must initiate proposals for the project.

The minister of state said Sotto has been established at Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute to cater to the needs of patients in the Union territory.
