MAYILADUTHURAI: A 34-year-old police constable was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old minor girl in Mayiladuthurai on Sunday. Consequently, he was suspended on Monday.
The accused has been identified as Thirunavukkarasu, attached to the Perambur police station.
According to police sources, on July 8, Thirunavukkarasu enticed a 16-year-old girl to visit his house while she was grazing goats near the police residential quarters and provided her with a spiked drink.
Once the girl was intoxicated, he sexually assaulted her. When the girl regained consciousness, she confronted the police constable.
He threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone. A few days later, the girl divulged the incident to her family members.
However, attempts were made to silence the family. Meanwhile, an individual informed the Childline helpline 1098 about the incident.
Acting on the information, child welfare committee (CWC) intervened and brought the issue to the attention of the police.
He was arrested and charged under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Thirunavukkarasu was produced in court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
Superintendent of police (SP) K Meena issued an order to suspend the constable from service.
