Puducherry man gets two years jail term for rash driving which caused death of woman

PUDUCHERRY: A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to a two-year jail term for rash and negligent driving, without a valid licence, which caused the death of a woman and injured three others in Puducherry 11 years ago.
Judicial magistrate II M Dhanalakshmi also slapped a fine of Rs 7,000 M Mohanraj.
According to assistant public prosecutor S Patcheappan, Mohanraj drove a tipper truck in a rash and negligent manner.The vehicle hit a motorcycle and fatally ran over rider Subasri. Pillion rider Rajalakshmi suffered injuries.
The heavy vehicle also hit another motorcycle and caused grievous injuries to rider Malarvizhi and simple injuries to pillion rider Bharani. The accident happened on March 30, 2009.
Traffic police booked the driver under sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
They also booked him under Section 3 (driving without a valid licence) of the Motor vehicle (MV) Act, read with section 181 (driving vehicles in contravention of section 3 of MV Act) and initiated legal proceedings against him.
The court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
