Vellore: The Vellore police have launched a hunt for gangster Vasur Raja, alias, Raja and his associates after a fruit shop vendor filed a complaint against them for ransacking his shop demanding money.
The gangster, along with four of his associates, namely, Yogesh, Yuvaraj, Veeramani and Karthick, had ransacked the shop of Nandha Kumar in Double Road in Sathuvachari on Sunday after he refused to give in to threats.
Police sources said Raja was out on bail. He was in jail for the kidnap-cum-murder of one Muthukumar.
The sub-divisional magistrate of Vellore executed a security behavior bond under 107 CrPC against the gangster before the assembly election. Though he remained low during the election, he started threatening the owners of commercial establishments and indulged in extortion after the election was over. He has also been given shelter by some politician in the city.
The gangster, who was facing cases of murder, extortion, kidnap and robbery, demanded one lakh from Nandha Kumar a month ago. "Nandha Kumar gave 25,000 to Vasur Raja last month. On Sunday, he sent his men to the shop and telephoned Nandha Kumar to give vegetables and fruits. But, Kumar refused to budge and sent Vasur Raja's men back," said a police source.
Irked over this, the history sheeter and his men came to the shop on Monday and ransacked it. They also took away 50,000 from the shop.
People said the gang threatened people constructing new houses to give 1 lakh to continue construction. Though the police were aware of his activities, they refused to act, people said.
The Sathuvahcari police registered a case.
