National Medical Commission’s UGMEB disapproves recognition for Puducherry Government Medical College MBBS degree
PUDUCHERRY: The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the National Medical Commission has disapproved the recognition for MBBS degree (150 seats) awarded by Pondicherry University to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC & RI), Puducherry as it found certain deficiencies in respect to the faculty and footage of cameras installed in the institute. The board, however, allowed the government institute to appeal before the National Medical Commission against its decision.
In a letter to the IGMC & RI dean/ principal, UGMEB director Shambhu Sharan Kumar said the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) appointed assessors to conduct an assessment after the government institute applied for grant of continuation of recognition of MBBS degree. The assessors made a virtual assessment during the final MBBS practical examinations in April last year and a physical verification of the facilities in January this year.
On reviewing the assessment reports along with the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS), Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) data including the CCTV footage, the board found deficiencies . It communicated this to the institute with a request to submit its response.
On receiving the response, the board held a virtual hearing with the institute authorities on May 15 this year. “After hearing the college authorities and careful consideration of the facts and compliance, it has been opined by the UGMEB that the response by college authorities is not found satisfactory and IGMC & RI still does not qualify for minimum requirement of faculty and resident doctors on AEBAS and also installation/ function of cameras. Hence, the application for continuation of recognition of MBBS degree (150 seats) awarded by Pondicherry University in respect of the students being trained at IGMC & RI, Puducherry is disapproved,” said Shambhu Sharan Kumar in the letter.
