Nanjil Sampath booked for offensive remarks against Kiran Bedi

PUDUCHERRY: Police on Friday booked DMK supporter Nanjil Sampath for making derogatory remarks against lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi during electioneering here for the DMK-led front in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Sampath was booked under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 354-A (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the

Indian Penal Code

. If convicted under Section 354 A, Nanjil Sampath can be punished with imprisonment of up to two years, or fine, or both. Section 294 attracts imprisonment of up to three months, or fine, or both.

Sampath, while addressing voters at Thattanchavady on Thursday, accused BJP in the Centre of using governors in states and lieutenant governors in Union territories to stifle non-BJP governments.

He questioned the interference of Bedi, not an elected representative, in the day-to-day affairs of the territorial administration, paralyzing the functioning of the elected government led by chief minister V Narayanasamy. He said BJP sent a person to Puducherry as lieutenant governor after she was driven out of Delhi.

BJP Puducherry unit on Thursday lodged a complaint with district election officer-cum-collector T Arun, seeking action against Sampath for making the derogatory remarks.
