VELLORE: Fearing that they would be murdered by a rival to avenge his close friend’s murder, a five-member gang hacked an anti-social to death at Saidapet here on Wednesday night .
A senior police officer identified the deceased as Dheena alias Dinesh Kumar, 31, of Suruttukara Street in Saidapet. He was a close associate of anti-social Tamilarasan of the same locality and was one of the four accused in a murder case in his locality in 2017.
Tamilarasan, who suspected his rival Mayna alias Sathish to be alerting police about their illegal activities including chain snatching and drug racket, had decided to eliminate him.
However, Sathish and his associates sprung a surprise and murdered Tamilarasan with the help of Thangaraj, Vinoth, Mani and Pazhani in February last. They were remanded in Vellore central prison.
Dheena, who could not bear the loss of his close friend Tamilarasan, had vowed to kill the five persons as soon as they stepped out of prison.
But, the gang led by Sathish, fearing for their lives, murdered Dheena while he was talking to a friend in his autorickshaw close to his residence and fled.
Vellore North police officers, who reached the spot, sent Dheena’s body for autopsy at the Vellore Government Medical College and Hospital.
Inspector Nagaraj, who registered a case under section 302 of IPC, launched a hunt to nab the absconding gang members.
