Communal tension rife in Villupuram

tension has mounted in the Villupuram Lok Sabha (reserved) constituency as candidates of VCK and PMK were stopped from campaigning in Vanniyar and dalit settlements respectively.

A senior police officer said on Friday while PMK candidate Vadivel Ravanan along with his alliance party cadres went for campaigning in the Koliyanur dalit colony, the residents stopped him from entering their colony. Though some local AIADMK functionaries tried to pacify the residents, the candidate was denied entry. The next day theVCK candidate D Ravikumar, contesting on DMK’s rising sun symbol, was denied entry to Panagkuppam and Thodarnthanur villages by members of Vanniyar community. The DMK cadres managed to control the situation after holding talks with villagers.

But during the campaign at Thodarnthanur, a few youths hurled stones on Ravikumar. Even though Ravikumar escaped unhurt, Ajay a VCK party worker from Ramayanpalayam village sustained injuries to head in the stone hurling .

On Sunday the stone throwing incident was condemned during VCK party campaign. The dalit residents of GRP street denied entry to Vadivel Ravanan who was accompanied by minister C Ve Shanmugam .

After the intervention of police the dalit residents who objected to the campaigning were dispersed from the spot .

Speaking to reporters, Villupuram SP S Jayakumar said that that trouble makers who managed to sneaks into the crowd were behind Stringent action would be taken after the miscreants were identified. To avert untoward incidents, the VCK and PMK candidates will be given adequate protection. A police team headed by a DSP , would be deployed during the campaigning, he added.
