Work on Patna water metro project begins

Patna: Work on Patna’s upcoming water metro corridor has begun with the first charging point taking shape at Gandhi Ghat, marking a major step toward launching electric–hybrid ferry services along a 10.5km stretch of the Ganga. Similar facilities will come up next at Kangan Ghat and Digha Ghat, officials said.

The initial Water Metro corridor is planned along a 10.5km route between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat. In the first phase, Gandhi Ghat and Gayghat will serve as major stops, while the broader alignment will cover multiple ghats and riverfront points. The service will start from Kangan Ghat and run via Gayghat, Gandhi Ghat, Digha Ghat, Farakka Mahto Ghat, Nariyal Ghat, Paanapur, Konhra Ghat, Kali Ghat (Sonpur) and Chechhar Ghat.


According to a Tourism Development Corporation Limited statement, the project is designed for future expansion into four routes with 10 terminals, enhancing connectivity across Patna and nearby districts such as Vaishali and Saran. The initiative is also expected to strengthen National Waterway-1 on the Ganga by offering an affordable alternative transport option for commuters and tourists.

The primary vessel planned for the service, “MV-Gomdhar Kunwar,” is priced at over Rs12 crore.
