PATNA: The Ruban Emergency Hospital on S P Verma Road was vandalized on Saturday morning after one Guriya Devi, 26, a resident of Saguna Mor, died at the hospital following a complicated pregnancy and Hypo Thermia.
Her kin alleged that Guriya died due to negligence in treatment by Dr Sharika Roy. They damaged the glass doors of the hospital and gheraoed it for about an hour.
The Gandhi Maidan police reached the spot later and dispersed the angry mob.
Dr Roy said, "Guriya was over seven months pregnant when she came to her clinic at Kankarbagh on January 3, complaining that her baby was not moving. She was under treatment in Kolkata earlier also. The last time I had attended her was on April 27 last year when she had just conceived and had Hypo Thyroidsim. But between April last year and January 3 this year, she never visited me. We had to operate her on January 8 to save the child but post operation, she developed Hypo Thermia and died on January 12 at 5.30am."
Colonel A K Singh, director of the hospital, said, "We released the body despite the fact that a bill of about Rs 1 lakh was pending. The patient's husband, Vikash Singh, received the body but, at round 10am, they gathered hundreds of people who vandalized the hospital."
Dr Roy said, "Guriya was operated at a Kankarbagh nursing home but as she turned critical, I decided to shift her to ICU, which is not available with the nursing home. We kept her husband in loop but it is unfortunate that to avoid payment of the pending bills, the deceased's kin are accusing us of negligence."
Vikash Singh said, "The doctor first claimed that both Guriya and the baby were critical. She wanted to operate her to save the baby, but she failed to save both the baby and the mother.
Patna SSP Amrit Raj said, "Both Vikash Singh and the hospital authorities have lodged FIR against each other. Vikash Singh in his FIR claimed that he had already paid the bill, but failed to produce the receipt."
