CHHAPRA: The district headquarters of Saran—Chhapra—got a woman as its first mayor on Tuesday. The ward councillor, who has been elected as deputy mayor, is also a lady.
It may be mentioned here that Chhapra Nagar Parishad was upgraded to a corporation.
Priya Kumari, wife of Mantu Singh and a councillor of ward number 43, was declared mayor after she defeated the councillor of ward number 23, Sunita Devi, on Tuesday.
While 36 councillors voted in favour of Priya, Sunita notched up the vote of seven councillors. Two votes were declared invalid.
Meanwhile, Amitanjali Soni, a councillor from ward number 37 was elected as deputy mayor. She defeated Rama Kant Singh, a former vice chairperson of Chhpara Nagar Parishad. While Soni secured 31 votes, Ramakant got 14.
In the civic polls held on August 6, women won 27 out of 45 wards.
To ensure peaceful polling, the district administration had imposed prohibitory order near the election venue as there were rumours of horse trading.
