Two drown in Saran tragedy

Patna: A post-wedding ritual turned into tragedy in Saran district on Wednesday when two women drowned, while two went missing while taking bath in the Gandak river near Baijalpur Jagdambasthan under Sonepur police station area. Two women died in the incident while search operations continue for the other two.

According to locals, a wedding recently took place at the house of Janardan Singh, a resident of Baijalpur. On Wednesday, family members went to the Gandak river to perform the ‘chauthari’ ritual held on the fourth day after marriage. While bathing, four suddenly went into deep water and started drowning. People present at the spot jumped into the river and managed to pull out two women. They were rushed to Sadar Hospital, Hajipur, where doctors declared them dead.

The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Babita Devi, wife of Janardan Singh, and 40-year-old Gudiya Devi, wife of Ravi Kumar, resident of Bakhtiyarpur in Patna district. The missing children were identified as Rishu Kumar, 12, and Richa Kumari, daughter of Gudiya Devi.

Sonepur SHO Dilip Kumar said, “Local police and an SDRF team carried out search operations in the Gandak river for the two missing persons. The rescue operation was halted in the evening as it grew dark. It will resume on Thursday morning.”
