Patna: Two minor cousins drowned after falling into a water-filled pit at Jitwarpur Maheshiya village under the Dernibazaar police station area of Saran district on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Anushka Kumari (5), daughter of Dinesh Sharma, and Neha Kumari (6), daughter of Sanjay Sharma. Both girls were playing near their home when the incident occurred.
According to villagers, the two had gone to pluck litchis from a nearby area early in the morning. While playing, they reached an open pit meant for water drainage. The pit, filled with water, had no safety cover or protective measures. The girls are suspected to have lost their balance and fallen into it.
Family members later found them floating in the pit and rushed them to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead during treatment.
Dernibazaar SHO Preeti Kumari said the incident occurred around 8am and police received information at about 10am. “A police team reached the spot, but the families refused post-mortem and submitted a written application,” she said.
