Tracking devices now must for all commercial vehicles in Bihar: Minister
Patna: State transport minister Shravan Kumar on Monday said it would soon be mandatory for all commercial vehicles in the state to be fitted with Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD). The minister made the announcement during a review meeting with department officials to assess the status of VLTD installation and emergency buttons in public and commercial vehicles.
Officials informed the minister that only 30–40% of public passenger vehicles in the state currently have tracking devices installed. Although 30 agencies are engaged in the installation process, their performance was found to be unsatisfactory.
The meeting noted that, as per prescribed norms, installation of VLTD and emergency buttons is mandatory in all public vehicles manufactured after January 1, 2019. Older public vehicles are also required to install these devices at the time of registration, permit renewal, insurance renewal, or fitness testing. Vehicles operating under national permits must also compulsorily have vehicle tracking systems.
Expressing concern, the minister said the absence of tracking systems has led to over-speeding, route violations, and sudden braking, contributing to road accidents. He also pointed out that unchecked movement of heavy vehicles on rural roads is damaging infrastructure.
He directed officials to strictly enforce compliance and warned that stringent action would be taken against vehicle operators failing to install the devices within the stipulated timeframe.
What is VLTD?
Vehicle Location Tracking Devices (VLTD) have been introduced primarily to enhance the safety of women and children. The system provides real-time information on a vehicle’s location and speed and includes an emergency button that can be used to seek immediate help. The devices are directly connected to the transport department’s control room, ensuring swift response and assistance as per established protocols during emergencies.
