Top Maoist surrenders without arms

MUZAFFARPUR: Self-styled area commander of CPI (Maoist) Vinay Kumar alias Vinay Ram surrendered before Muzaffarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manoj Kumar on Tuesday.

Ram is a resident of Bahuara Gopi Singh village under the Rajepur police station area in

East Champaran district

. He was wanted in more than 20 cases lodged with different police stations in Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Sheohar and Sitamarhi districts.

The SSP, however, said Ram did not lay down arms before the police. “Ram is an area commander of the CPI (Maoist). He was very active in north Bihar region since joining the outfit in 2008. He was recently elevated to the post of area commander of

Champaran

and Sheohar. Our intensified operation done under the surveillance of additional SP (operation) Bimlendu Jha forced him to surrender,” the SSP said, adding some officials from the special branch played a major role in the surrender.

Talking to this newspaper after surrendering, Ram said he was fed up with living the life of a fugitive. “I have been feeling uncomfortable for quite some time. I was frightened whenever I thought of my kin and their future. I want to give a secure life to them. So, I decided to surrender,” he said.

Ram was produced before the chief judicial magistrate court from where he was forwarded to central jail.
