Patna: To many an eligible bachelor, Akshay Tritiya every year has been the most favourite day to solemnize marriages ever since cine stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai tied the knot on the day a few years back. Marriages solemnized on the day, according to astrology, proves lucky for couples, but astrologers say marriages cannot be solemnized on Akshay Tritiya on May 9 this year as planetary conjunctions are not auspicious.
In fact, there is no ‘shubh muhurat’ or ‘shubh lagan’ on any day for the next two months after May 4 this year for tying the knot, say purohits.
“Akshay Tritiya or Akha Teej is celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of Vaisakha when both the sun and the moon are at their extreme point. The occasion is considered very auspicious by Hindus and Jains,” said astrologer Bramhanand Pandey.
The priest, however, said Venus, considered the lord of marital life, is combusted this time. “And ‘nakshatra dosh’ causes harm to marriages that are solemnized when either Venus or Jupiter is weak,” he added.
According to science teacher and astrologer Mukeshwar Mishra, legend has it that Lord Ganesha started writing the Mahabharata to Ved Vyas’s dictation on Akshay Tritiya. While the day also marks the first day of Treta Yug, Lord Vishu is believed to have incarnated on the earth as Parashuram on this day. “It’s, therefore, an auspicious day, but Venus this year is debilitated,” Mishra said and added ‘shubh muhurats’ this year for marriages would now begin only after July 7.
Varanasi-based priest Acharya Ramanuj Thakur nodded. “The stars are now not favourable for any auspicious occasion like marriage, grih pravesh, upanayan samskar, namkaran etc,” he said.
The Mithila Panchang makes an exception, however. "According to our almanac, marriages can be solemnized on June 27 and 29. No other almanac has any ‘shubh mahurat‘ before July,” said priest Animesh Thakur.
