RANCHI: All that Class VIII student Siddharth Somani did was ask a friend to return his history book. His teacher grew so furious at this that he slapped the 12-year-old, dragged him by the collar to the front of the class, punched him in the face five or six times and then kicked him out.Siddharth has lost his hearing in one ear, fractured two fingers and seems traumatized for life.
Though a complaint has been lodged, the accused teacher, Arun Kumar Sinha, is yet to be arrested for the alleged brutality.
The incident happened at DPS, Ranchi, on Wednesday when Sinha, a history teacher, was taking a class. Siddharth says he turned around to ask a classmate sitting behind him to return his history book. Sinha saw him "talking", rushed to him and held him by his collar.The teacher allegedly tried to pull him out of the desk, but the child's legs got stuck and he fell down. Sinha then dragged him to the front of the class, "punched him five or six times" in the face, kicked him and pushed him out of the door, Siddharth says. His classmates could only look on in horror as he was roughed up."I felt dizzy and could not hear anything. In the next period, I somehow entered the classroom and sat on my seat, but immediately lost consciousness. When I came to my senses I found myself in the school infirmary," said the boy.Somani was admitted to Marwari Seva Sadan hospital. His father, Raj Kumar Somani, who runs an advertising agency, has lodged an FIR at Jagannathpur police station against the teacher.His mother Sangeeta Somani is shocked. Terming the incident inhuman, she said, "Siddhartha's left ear drum is ruptured. He is under observation and has to go in for surgery. Two fingers of his right hand have cracks," she said.DPS principal Mahesh Bareja said the management committee would "definitely take action" against Sinha after inquiring into the matter. "The teacher has accepted his mistake and is apologetic," said Bareja.Jagannathpur OC K P Yadav said a complaint had been lodged against Sinha under Sections 341, 333, 325 of IPC for "wrongful restraint" and "causing grievous injury".
