BAGAHA: At least two persons died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in a West Champaran village of Majhaulia police station area on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Ashok Sah (40) and Kishori Sah (35) of village Laksaraiya. One Amritesh Pasawan alias Anshu (25) was undergoing treatment in a hospital. All the three had allegedly consumed spurious liquor in neighbouring Bakharia Dhangartoli.

Three persons were arrested with six litres of country liquor from Bakharia Dhangartoli village, West Champaran SP Amarkesh D said on Sunday. "The deaths look suspicious. We are investigating the incident," said the SP.

Sources said the family members of Ashok Sah cremated his body the same day without any postmortem. However, the police sent the body of Kishori to GMCH for autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of death. The third one, Amritesh, was admitted to GMCH for treatment.

The SP said that Ashok was suffering from serious illness and his family members cremated his body without autopsy. He suspected Ashok's death due to illness. Liquor was recovered from a place where the victims used to visit to consume alcohol.

The West Champaran administration on Sunday said a medical team has been rushed to the area to verify the case but could not find any person who had consumed alcohal.

Paschimi Champaran (Bettiah) MP and former state BJP president Dr Sanjay Jaiswal alleged that they died due to consumption of spurious liquor and the victims were left in an abandoned condition at GMCH, Bettiah. He further said that the body was cremated under the pressure of administration.

"Since consuming liquor, my grandson Anshu has not been well. I have informed local police. The situation of my grandson is critical and he is admitted to GMCH Bettiah. Two persons from my village have died so far," said Prabhawati Devi, the grandmother of Anshu.

Liquor prohibition law has been imposed in Bihar since April, 2016. Since then, a large number of people have lost their lives in hooch tragedies in the state.
